SELLERSTACK PRICING GUIDE · UPDATED FOR 2026
How to Calculate Marketplace Fees in the UK
Understand percentage fees, fixed charges, payment processing, fulfilment, advertising and other marketplace costs so you can calculate what a sale could actually leave as profit.
UK Marketplace Fee Guide
Marketplace fees, advertising charges, fulfilment programmes and seller-account rules change regularly.
This guide explains the calculation principles first, then looks at the current fee structures used by eBay, Amazon, Vinted, Depop, Etsy and TikTok Shop.

How Do You Calculate Marketplace Fees?
Start by identifying every marketplace charge that applies to your transaction.
Depending on the platform, this could include:
- a percentage selling or referral fee;
- a fixed per-order or processing charge;
- a listing fee;
- a monthly seller subscription;
- payment processing;
- fulfilment or storage;
- advertising or boosting;
- affiliate commission;
- international or currency-conversion charges;
- VAT on marketplace services where applicable.
Then calculate the complete sale:
Total Revenue − Marketplace Costs − Stock Cost − Fulfilment − Packaging − Other Seller Costs = Estimated Net Profit
The important point is that different marketplaces calculate their fees differently. There is no single percentage formula that works accurately for every platform.

Enter the same selling price, stock cost, shipping and packaging figures and compare estimated marketplace fees, profit, margin and ROI across eBay, Amazon FBA, Etsy, TikTok Shop, Vinted and Depop.
Marketplace Fees Are Only One Part of the Sale
One of the most common reseller mistakes is treating the marketplace deduction as the complete cost of selling.
Imagine you sell an item for £40 and the platform takes £4.
That does not mean you made £36 profit.
You may still need to subtract:
- the amount you paid for the stock;
- postage;
- packaging;
- preparation or repairs;
- advertising;
- storage or fulfilment;
- other transaction-specific costs.
Marketplace Fee and Net Profit Are Different Numbers
Fees tell you what the platform takes. Profit tells you what remains after the platform and the rest of the sale have been paid for.
The Main Types of Marketplace Fees
Before calculating anything, identify how the platform charges you.
Percentage Fee
A percentage of some defined transaction amount.
Examples include eBay final value fees, Amazon referral fees and Etsy transaction fees.
Fixed Transaction Fee
A set amount added per sale or order.
This matters particularly on lower-value products because the fixed charge consumes a larger share of the revenue.
Listing Fee
A charge for creating or renewing a listing, whether or not the item ultimately sells.
Subscription
A monthly seller-plan or shop cost that needs to be recovered across the sales produced by the business.
Fulfilment & Storage
Charges for storing, picking, packing or delivering inventory. Amazon FBA is the clearest example.
Optional Promotion
Advertising, boosted listings, affiliate commission or other promotional costs that apply only when you choose to use them or when attribution conditions are met.
What Amount Is the Percentage Fee Applied To?
This is where many manual calculations go wrong.
A marketplace percentage is not always calculated only against the item price.
Depending on the platform, the fee base can include:
- item price;
- postage paid by the buyer;
- gift wrapping;
- discount treatment;
- taxes in certain calculations;
- other amounts defined by the platform.
Item Price Is Not Always the Fee Base
Suppose you sell an item for £30 and charge the buyer £3 postage.
If the marketplace calculates a 10% fee on the full £33 order amount:
£33 × 10% = £3.30
Calculating 10% of only the £30 item price would underestimate the fee by 30p.
Seller Fees and Buyer Fees Are Not the Same Thing
Some marketplaces increasingly use buyer-side charges as part of their business model.
A buyer fee should not automatically be subtracted from the seller’s payout as though it were a seller commission.
But that does not make buyer fees irrelevant.
If the buyer sees:
- £30 item price;
- plus postage;
- plus marketplace protection or buyer fees;
their actual checkout cost may be materially higher than the headline listing price.
That can affect offers, conversion and the maximum price buyers are willing to accept.
Seller-side fees affect what you keep. Buyer-side fees can affect what the customer is willing to pay. Both matter, but they belong in different parts of the analysis.
Remember VAT on Marketplace Services
Some marketplace fee schedules are presented before VAT, while other charges are already stated as VAT-inclusive.
This makes copying a percentage from a fee table and treating it as the final cash cost potentially misleading.
For example, eBay’s underlying UK Regulatory Operating Fee for business sellers is 0.35%, and eBay explains that VAT on that fee can produce a 0.42% VAT-inclusive cost.
TikTok Shop, by contrast, currently describes its standard UK platform commission as inclusive of applicable taxes including VAT.
Whether VAT is ultimately a cost to your business can depend on your VAT registration and accounting circumstances. Keep the marketplace charge and your own VAT position conceptually separate.
How eBay UK Fees Work
eBay needs to be split into private sellers and business sellers before the calculation begins.
UK Private Sellers
UK-based private sellers currently receive 300 free listings per month and do not normally pay final value or Regulatory Operating Fees on eligible domestic sales.
Optional listing upgrades, international delivery and certain categories or services can still create charges.
eBay Business Sellers
Business sellers use a category-based fee structure.
The core transaction can include:
- a category-specific final value percentage;
- a per-order charge;
- the Regulatory Operating Fee;
- optional advertising;
- international charges where applicable;
- listing or Shop-related costs where relevant.
The current standard per-order charge is:
- 30p for orders of £10 or less;
- 40p for orders above £10.
The final value percentage varies by category rather than using one universal eBay business rate.
Percentage Fee + Fixed Order Charge
Suppose the fee base is £33 and your applicable final value rate is 10.9%.
Variable final value fee: £33 × 10.9% = £3.60
Per-order charge: £0.40
Regulatory Operating Fee at 0.35%: about £0.12 before applicable VAT treatment
This example still does not include your stock, postage, packaging, advertising or other business costs.

How Amazon UK Fees Work
Amazon has one of the more layered marketplace cost structures because the final cost depends on both the seller plan and the fulfilment model.
Selling Plan
Amazon currently offers:
- Individual: £0.75 per unit sold excluding VAT, plus applicable selling fees.
- Professional: £25 per month excluding VAT, plus applicable selling fees.
Referral Fee
Referral fees vary by category and can also vary by selling-price band.
Amazon calculates the referral percentage on the total sales price, including the item price and applicable delivery or gift-wrapping charges.
FBA Adds Another Cost Layer
If you use Fulfilment by Amazon, your calculation may also need to include:
- FBA fulfilment fee;
- storage;
- inbound shipping;
- product preparation;
- aged-inventory exposure;
- removal or disposal where relevant;
- advertising.
Do not calculate Amazon profit as selling price minus referral fee. For an FBA product, fulfilment and inventory-related charges can be just as important as the referral percentage.
For the complete selling workflow, see our How to Sell on Amazon UK guide .

How Vinted UK Fees Work
Vinted uses a very different model from eBay business selling, Amazon or Etsy.
Standard Vinted sellers currently pay no fee to upload or sell an item.
The buyer instead pays mandatory Buyer Protection as part of the checkout process.
That means a standard seller-side profit calculation can be much simpler:
Sale Price − Stock Cost − Seller Costs − Optional Promotion = Estimated Seller Profit
But remember that the buyer’s total checkout cost can still affect whether your asking price is competitive.
Calculate What You Could Keep on Vinted
Include stock, packaging and optional seller costs while also considering the buyer-side checkout total.
How Depop UK Fees Work
UK Depop sellers currently pay no standard Depop selling commission.
However, ordinary sales are not completely free.
Depop Payments Processing
The current UK payment-processing fee is:
2.9% + £0.30
Depop applies that processing charge to the item sale price plus shipping and applicable taxes.
Boosted Listings
Optional Boosted Listings can materially change the economics of the sale.
For qualifying UK boosted listings under the current structure, Depop charges a 12% boosting fee when the relevant attribution conditions are met.
Run the Product With and Without Boosting
The difference shows how much additional margin you are exchanging for the extra visibility.
Model Processing and Boosted Listings
Compare the same sale with promotion switched off and on before deciding whether boosting makes sense.
How Etsy UK Fees Work
Etsy is a good example of why one headline percentage does not describe the real marketplace cost.
A UK Etsy sale can include several separate fee types.
| Fee | Current Structure |
|---|---|
| Listing Fee | US$0.20 when a listing is created or renewed, converted into the payment-account currency |
| Transaction Fee | 6.5% of the applicable order amount |
| UK Etsy Payments | 4% + £0.20 |
| UK Regulatory Operating Fee | 0.48% |
| Advertising | Additional where Etsy Ads or applicable Offsite Ads are involved |
Do not simply add 6.5% to your product cost and assume you have covered Etsy. Transaction, payment-processing, listing, regulatory and optional advertising costs can all be separate.

How TikTok Shop UK Fees Work
TikTok Shop currently uses a standard UK platform commission rate of 9%, although reduced rates, incentives or category arrangements can apply in some circumstances.
TikTok’s published commission formula takes into account the completed order amount, including applicable customer-paid shipping.
Affiliate Commission Is Separate
If a creator generates the sale through TikTok Shop Affiliate, your agreed affiliate commission can become an additional acquisition cost.
For example, a product could simultaneously carry:
- platform commission;
- creator commission;
- fulfilment or postage;
- packaging;
- stock cost;
- seller-funded discounts.
That is why high TikTok Shop revenue does not automatically mean strong profit.
Our TikTok Shop UK Fees guide covers the current fee structure in more detail.

Six Marketplace Fee Models at a Glance
| Marketplace | Main Seller Cost Model | Extra Costs to Watch |
|---|---|---|
| eBay Business | Category FVF + fixed order fee + regulatory fee | Advertising, international, listing / Shop costs |
| Amazon | Selling plan + category referral fee | FBA, storage, advertising, inventory costs |
| Vinted | No standard seller listing or sale fee | Optional seller services and own fulfilment costs |
| Depop | UK payment processing | Boosted Listings, fulfilment |
| Etsy | Listing + transaction + processing + regulatory | Advertising, currency conversion, renewals |
| TikTok Shop | Platform commission | Affiliate, fulfilment, discounts, advertising |
Optional Costs Can Be Larger Than the Standard Marketplace Fee
The standard transaction charge is not always the biggest platform cost.
Advertising
eBay Promoted Listings, Amazon Ads, Etsy Ads and other paid-placement systems can reduce the contribution left from each order.
If advertising is genuinely required to produce the sale, include it when evaluating the product.
Boosted Listings
A Depop sale attributed to a Boosted Listing can have dramatically different economics from an organically generated sale.
Affiliate Commission
TikTok Shop sellers working with creators need to account for the agreed commission separately from the standard platform charge.
Subscription Costs
Monthly marketplace plans are business overhead rather than necessarily a direct fee on one transaction.
For decision-making, you can allocate an approximate monthly subscription cost across your expected sales volume.
Suppose a seller pays £25 per month for a marketplace plan and sells 100 units that month.
A simple management estimate would allocate:
£25 ÷ 100 = £0.25 per sale
That does not change how the marketplace invoices the fee, but it helps you understand whether the business is recovering the subscription through its sales.
International and Currency-Conversion Costs
Cross-border sales can introduce additional fee layers.
Depending on the platform and transaction, these may include:
- international marketplace fees;
- currency conversion;
- cross-border fulfilment;
- customs or import-related costs;
- different payment-processing treatment.
If a transaction is cross-border, do not assume the fee model is identical to a normal UK domestic sale.
Buyer-Paid Postage Is Not Automatically Profit
If a buyer pays £4 for delivery and you spend £3.50 on the carrier, your shipping economics are not simply a £4 gain.
In addition, some platforms include customer-paid postage within the amount used to calculate percentage-based fees.
Keep these two figures separate:
- postage charged to buyer;
- your actual shipping cost.
SellerStack’s UK Shipping Cost Comparison Calculator can help test delivery scenarios before you set the listing price.
How to Calculate True Net Profit
Once the marketplace fee has been calculated correctly, move to the full transaction.
A useful general model is:
Net Profit = Total Order Revenue − Marketplace Costs − Stock Cost − Fulfilment − Packaging − Other Costs
Worked Example
Assume:
- item price = £30;
- buyer postage = £3;
- total revenue = £33;
- percentage marketplace fee = 10%;
- fixed marketplace fee = £0.40;
- stock cost = £8;
- actual postage = £3.20;
- packaging = £0.40.
| Total order revenue | £33.00 |
| 10% percentage fee | − £3.30 |
| Fixed marketplace fee | − £0.40 |
| Stock cost | − £8.00 |
| Shipping cost | − £3.20 |
| Packaging | − £0.40 |
| Estimated Net Profit | £17.70 |

Do Not Stop at the Profit Amount
Two products can produce the same £15 profit while being very different investments.
Profit Margin
Margin measures the share of revenue remaining as profit.
A simplified formula is:
Profit Margin = Net Profit ÷ Revenue × 100
Return on Investment
ROI looks at the profit generated relative to the money invested in the stock.
That can be particularly useful when comparing two sourcing opportunities requiring very different amounts of capital.
Use the Reseller ROI Calculator when the question is not simply “how much profit?” but “how efficiently is my stock money working?”
How to Calculate Break-Even Properly
The old shortcut:
Stock + Shipping + Packaging + Estimated Marketplace Fee
can be misleading when the marketplace fee itself is calculated as a percentage of the selling price.
If you lower the selling price, the percentage fee also changes.
So the percentage needs to be solved as part of the equation.
Where:
- C = seller costs excluding percentage fee;
- F = fixed marketplace fee;
- P = percentage marketplace fee as a decimal;
- R = required revenue.
Then:
R = (C + F) ÷ (1 − P)
This works only when the stated percentage applies consistently to the revenue being modelled. Layered marketplace structures require the relevant components to be treated separately.
Break-Even Example
Suppose your costs excluding marketplace fees are £11.60, the fixed platform charge is £0.40 and the percentage fee is 10%.
Required break-even revenue:
(£11.60 + £0.40) ÷ (1 − 0.10) = £12 ÷ 0.90 = £13.33
At approximately £13.33 of fee-bearing revenue, the sale recovers those entered costs without producing a profit.
Let SellerStack Solve the Percentage Fee
Enter your stock, fulfilment, percentage fee and fixed charge and calculate the approximate selling price required to cover the entered costs.
Work Backwards From the Profit You Need
Break-even tells you the minimum needed to avoid a loss.
A business usually needs more than break-even.
If you want to calculate the selling price required to cover costs and generate a target profit, the logic becomes:
Required Revenue = (Costs + Fixed Fee + Desired Profit) ÷ (1 − Percentage Fee)
That is the logic behind SellerStack’s Product Pricing Calculator .
Do Not Ask Only “What Can I Sell It For?”
Also ask: “What does it need to sell for after the fees and costs if I want this deal to be worth doing?”
How to Compare the Same Product Across Marketplaces
Marketplace comparisons become useful only when the assumptions are consistent.
Start with the same:
- product;
- purchase cost;
- condition;
- packaging cost;
- realistic expected selling price;
- seller-side fulfilment costs.
Then change only the marketplace-specific elements.
1. Set a Realistic Selling Price
Use market evidence rather than the highest active listing you can find.
2. Enter the Correct Seller Type
Private and business economics can differ materially.
3. Use the Correct Fee Rate
Category, programme, seller plan and promotion settings can all change the fee.
4. Include Fulfilment Differences
Amazon FBA cannot be compared fairly with self-fulfilment while ignoring the labour or postage required elsewhere.
5. Compare Profit and ROI
Lowest fee does not necessarily mean best financial outcome.
6. Add Non-Financial Factors
Demand, buyer fit, selling speed, returns and operational workload can outweigh a small fee difference.
Run One Product Through Six Platforms
Compare estimated fees, profit, margin and ROI for the same product instead of comparing headline percentages manually.
Does the Marketplace With the Lowest Fees Produce the Most Profit?
Not necessarily.
Suppose:
- Marketplace A costs £2 in seller fees and sells the item for £25.
- Marketplace B costs £5 in fees but supports a £35 selling price.
Marketplace B may still generate more net profit.
The outcome also depends on how quickly the product sells and how much seller work each transaction requires.
Fees Are a Cost, Not the Marketplace Decision
Choose a platform using the combination of demand, achievable selling price, seller costs, buyer friction, fulfilment, selling speed and risk.
Browse the SellerStack Marketplaces Hub when the question has moved from “what are the fees?” to “which marketplace actually fits this product?”
Marketplace Fees Should Affect Your Buying Price
Fee calculations are useful before listing, but they become even more valuable before you buy the stock.
If a product’s expected selling price cannot comfortably cover:
- marketplace fees;
- stock cost;
- fulfilment;
- packaging;
- the profit and ROI you require;
then the real problem may be the buying price.
Our guide to how much to pay for resale stock explains how to work backwards from the expected sale.
12 Common Marketplace Fee Calculation Mistakes
1. Applying the Percentage Only to the Item Price
Some marketplaces also include buyer-paid postage or other amounts in the fee base.
2. Using One Percentage for Every Category
eBay and Amazon rates can vary substantially by category.
3. Ignoring Fixed Fees
A 30p or 40p charge matters far more on a £5 sale than on a £100 sale.
4. Forgetting Payment Processing
Some marketplaces separate processing from their headline selling fee.
5. Treating Buyer Fees as Seller Fees
Buyer-side charges affect checkout economics but are not necessarily deducted from your payout.
6. Ignoring VAT on Marketplace Services
Check whether the published rate is before or after applicable VAT.
7. Treating Postage Charged to the Buyer as Free Money
You still need to pay the actual delivery cost, and the platform may charge a percentage on the postage revenue.
8. Forgetting Optional Advertising
Promotion can materially change a profitable-looking transaction.
9. Ignoring Fulfilment and Storage
This is particularly important when modelling Amazon FBA.
10. Calculating Break-Even by Adding a Fixed Fee Estimate
If the fee is percentage-based, the fee changes with the selling price and must be solved accordingly.
11. Comparing Marketplace Fees Without Comparing Selling Price
A more expensive platform can still produce the stronger net result.
12. Using Old Fee Tables
Marketplace pricing changes frequently. Verify important figures before committing money.

Marketplace Fees UK: FAQs
How do I calculate a percentage marketplace fee?
Identify the amount the marketplace uses as its fee base and multiply that amount by the applicable percentage expressed as a decimal. For example, a 10% fee on £30 is £3. Remember that some platforms include postage or other amounts in the fee base.
Do marketplace fees apply to postage?
Often, yes. eBay business final value fees, Amazon referral fees, Etsy transaction fees and several other marketplace calculations can include buyer-paid postage within the applicable fee base. Check the exact platform rule rather than assuming delivery revenue is excluded.
Which UK marketplace has the lowest seller fees?
Standard Vinted sellers currently pay no standard fee to list or sell, while UK Depop sellers currently pay no standard Depop selling commission but do pay payment processing. However, lowest seller fee does not automatically mean highest profit because selling price, buyer costs, demand and fulfilment differ between marketplaces.
Are eBay fees the same for private and business sellers?
No. UK-based private sellers currently receive a fee-free structure for most eligible domestic sales, while business sellers use category-based final value fees together with additional applicable charges.
Does Amazon charge one fixed selling percentage?
No. Amazon referral fees vary by category and sometimes price band. Sellers may also face selling-plan costs, FBA or FBM fulfilment, storage, advertising and other expenses depending on how the product is sold.
What fees do UK Depop sellers pay?
UK sellers currently pay no standard Depop selling commission. Depop Payments processing is currently 2.9% plus £0.30, and optional qualifying Boosted Listings can add a further promotion cost.
What fees does Etsy charge UK sellers?
Etsy’s standard fee structure can include a US$0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee, UK Etsy Payments processing of 4% plus £0.20, a UK Regulatory Operating Fee and optional advertising or other charges.
What is the TikTok Shop UK commission?
TikTok Shop currently publishes a standard UK platform commission rate of 9%, although reduced rates or incentives can apply in some circumstances. Affiliate commissions and fulfilment expenses are separate costs.
How do I calculate break-even when the marketplace fee is a percentage?
If the percentage fee applies consistently to the revenue being modelled, divide your costs plus any fixed fee by one minus the fee percentage. For example, with a 10% fee you divide by 0.90 rather than simply adding a guessed fee amount.
Should I choose the marketplace with the lowest fees?
Not automatically. Compare achievable selling price, demand, seller costs, buyer checkout cost, selling speed, fulfilment, returns and workload. A marketplace with higher fees can still produce more profit if it supports a better selling outcome.
Can I calculate fees before buying stock?
Yes, and this is one of the most useful times to do it. Estimate the realistic selling price and fees before sourcing so you can determine whether enough profit and ROI remain to justify the purchase.
Calculate the Complete Sale, Not Just the Headline Fee
Marketplace fees matter, but no single percentage tells you whether a product is worth selling.
Start by identifying exactly what the marketplace charges and what amount those charges are calculated against.
Then include the rest of the transaction: stock, fulfilment, packaging, advertising and any other costs required to complete the sale.
Finally, compare the outcome using profit, margin, ROI and break-even price rather than focusing only on the platform’s headline commission.
The strongest marketplace is not necessarily the one that takes the least. It is the one that gives your product a viable combination of demand, selling price, costs, selling speed and manageable operational risk.
Verify Current Fees Before Important Pricing or Sourcing Decisions
Marketplace rates, category fees, payment processing, advertising, fulfilment, buyer charges and programme eligibility can change.
SellerStack periodically reviews important fee information, but the current fee schedule, seller account and transaction statement from the marketplace should take priority.
