Calculate your goal to see the sales, revenue and stock levels behind it.
What Would It Take to Reach Your Reselling Profit Goal?
The Reseller Goal Planner works backwards from your desired monthly profit and estimates the sales, revenue and inventory needed to support that target.
Instead of starting with what you currently sell, it starts with the result you want and turns it into a practical monthly, weekly and working-day plan.
How the Reseller Goal Planner Works
The calculator starts with your target monthly profit and adds any fixed monthly overheads that are not already included in your average profit-per-sale figure.
Required monthly contribution
Target monthly profit + monthly fixed overheads
That required contribution is then divided by the average profit generated by each sale.
Sales required
Required monthly contribution ÷ average profit per sale
Because you cannot make part of a normal item sale, SellerStack rounds the result up to the next whole sale.
Target: £1,500 Monthly Profit
Target monthly profit: £1,500
Monthly fixed overheads: £300
Required contribution: £1,800
Average profit per sale: £25
Calculation: £1,800 ÷ £25 = 72 sales
Minimum monthly sales required: 72
What Should You Enter as Average Profit per Sale?
The Average Profit per Sale figure is one of the most important assumptions in the planner.
It should represent the average profit remaining from one sale after the direct costs associated with that sale, such as:
- Stock purchase cost
- Marketplace or selling fees
- Payment-processing charges
- Postage you pay
- Packaging
- Other direct per-sale costs
Do not deduct the monthly fixed overheads again if you are entering them separately in the planner.
If you need to establish a realistic profit-per-sale figure first, use the SellerStack Reseller Profit Calculator .
How the Revenue Target Is Estimated
Once the planner knows the number of sales required, it multiplies that sales target by your average selling price.
Monthly sales target × average selling price
= estimated revenue target
Monthly sales target: 72 items
Average selling price: £50
Estimated monthly revenue: 72 × £50 = £3,600
Turn the Monthly Goal Into a Weekly and Daily Pace
A monthly target can feel abstract. The planner therefore converts the minimum sales requirement into smaller operating targets.
📅 Sales per Week
SellerStack converts the monthly target using the average number of weeks in a year:
Monthly sales ÷ (52 ÷ 12)
🗓️ Sales per Working Day
The sales target is divided by the number of working days you enter for the month.
Monthly sales ÷ working days
In the worked example, 72 monthly sales equal approximately 16.6 sales per week.
With 20 working days per month, the same target equals approximately 3.6 sales per working day.
Compare the Goal With Your Current Sales Pace
Current Monthly Sales is optional, but entering it helps turn the goal into a clearer growth target.
If the target requires 72 sales and you currently average 50:
72 target sales − 50 current sales
= 22 additional sales required
The planner also estimates the profit generated by your current sales volume using the same average-profit assumption.
Current monthly sales: 50
Average profit per sale: £25
Fixed overheads: £300
Estimated current monthly profit: 50 × £25 − £300 = £950
Why Sell-Through Rate Matters to the Goal
Reaching a monthly sales target usually requires more inventory to be available than the number of products you expect to sell.
The Expected Monthly Sell-Through Rate represents the percentage of available inventory you expect to sell during an average month.
Estimated stock needed
Monthly sales target ÷ sell-through rate
Monthly sales target: 72 items
Expected monthly sell-through: 60%
Calculation: 72 ÷ 0.60 = 120 items
Estimated available inventory needed: 120 items
What Does Estimated Stock Investment Mean?
The planner multiplies the estimated inventory needed by the average stock cost entered.
Estimated stock needed × average stock cost
= estimated stock investment
In the example:
Estimated stock needed: 120 items
Average stock cost: £15
Estimated inventory at cost: £1,800
Use a Realistic Sell-Through Assumption
Sell-through has a major effect on the amount of inventory the planner estimates you may need.
| Monthly Sales Target | Sell-Through | Estimated Stock Needed |
|---|---|---|
| 72 | 40% | 180 items |
| 72 | 60% | 120 items |
| 72 | 80% | 90 items |
A higher sell-through assumption reduces the estimated stock required, but entering an unrealistic rate can make the plan look easier to achieve than it really is.

Sometimes the Better Goal Is More Profit per Sale
Increasing sales volume is not the only way to reach a profit target.
Using the same £1,800 required monthly contribution:
| Average Profit per Sale | Minimum Sales Required |
|---|---|
| £15 | 120 |
| £20 | 90 |
| £25 | 72 |
| £30 | 60 |
| £40 | 45 |
Do You Need More Sales or Better Sales?
If the required sales volume looks unrealistic, do not assume the only answer is to work harder.
You may also be able to improve the model by sourcing better stock, increasing average profit per sale, improving pricing or reducing unnecessary costs.
Check Whether the Goal Fits Your Available Time
A target may make sense financially but still require more processing, listing, packing and admin time than you realistically have available.
The Reseller Goal Planner shows the sales pace. The Reseller Hourly Earnings Calculator helps you check whether the time required to generate the profit remains worthwhile.
Make Sure the Goal Can Be Funded
The stock requirement may reveal another constraint: cash.
A target that requires £1,800 of inventory at cost may be achievable on paper but difficult to support if most of your available money is already tied up in slow-moving stock.
Use the Inventory Cashflow Planner to test how purchasing and replenishing stock could affect the cash available in the business.
Use the Goal Planner With the Wider Business Numbers
The target is more useful when you test it against the other parts of the operation.

Reseller Goal Planning Mistakes to Avoid
- Using an unrealistic profit per sale. Base it on actual results where possible rather than the best product you have ever sold.
- Forgetting fixed overheads. Monthly subscriptions, storage and other recurring costs still need to be covered.
- Confusing revenue with profit. A £3,600 sales target does not mean £3,600 of earnings.
- Assuming every listed item will sell. Use a realistic sell-through assumption when estimating inventory requirements.
- Treating stock investment as monthly purchasing. The figure represents estimated available inventory at cost, not necessarily new stock that must be purchased every month.
- Ignoring current stock health. More inventory is not always helpful if existing stock is already moving slowly.
- Ignoring time capacity. A financially attractive goal can still create an unsustainable workload.
- Treating the plan as a prediction. It is a model based on the assumptions you enter, not a guarantee that the target will be reached.
Turn the Goal Into Numbers You Can Actually Manage
“I want to make £1,500 per month” is an ambition. A target of 72 sales, £3,600 revenue and roughly 120 available items is an operating plan.
Use the planner to expose what the goal requires, then decide whether the better route is more sales, higher profit per sale, faster-moving stock or a different target altogether.
Reseller Goal Planner Methodology
The SellerStack Reseller Goal Planner works backwards from a target monthly profit using the average profit per sale and monthly fixed overheads entered by the user.
Required sales are rounded upward to the next whole item. Revenue is estimated using the average selling price entered.
Estimated inventory requirements are calculated by dividing the sales target by the expected monthly sell-through rate. Stock investment is then estimated using the average stock cost.
Weekly sales use the average 52 weeks divided across 12 months. Working-day targets use the number of monthly working days entered by the user.
The planner uses averages and does not predict demand, marketplace performance, seasonality or future sales.
It is designed for business planning and educational use rather than as a guarantee of income, sales or profit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how many sales I need to reach a profit goal?
Add your monthly fixed overheads to the target monthly profit, then divide that amount by your average profit per sale. SellerStack rounds the result up to the next whole sale.
Should average profit per sale include fixed overheads?
Not if you are entering those overheads separately in the planner. Avoid deducting the same cost twice.
What is sell-through rate?
Sell-through rate is the percentage of available inventory that you expect to sell during the period being measured. In this planner it is used to estimate how much inventory may be needed to support the monthly sales target.
Does estimated stock investment mean how much I need to spend every month?
No. It estimates the cost value of inventory needed to support the target under the sell-through assumption entered. Existing inventory can form part of that stock.
Why does SellerStack round the sales target up?
Normal product sales are whole transactions. If the calculation produces 71.2 sales, 71 sales would not fully support the target under the assumptions entered, so the planner uses 72.
Can I use the planner if I do not know my current monthly sales?
Yes. Current Monthly Sales is optional. The planner can still calculate the sales, revenue and stock targets required by your goal.
Is the Reseller Goal Planner a forecast of future income?
No. It is a planning model based on the averages and assumptions you enter. Actual demand, selling prices, costs and sell-through can be different.
Is the Reseller Goal Planner free?
Yes. The SellerStack Reseller Goal Planner is free to use and does not require a SellerStack account.
