How This Result Is Calculated
SellerStack adds the selling price and any buyer postage, then subtracts marketplace fees, stock cost, shipping, packaging and other entered expenses to estimate your final profit.
Understanding Your Profit Calculator Results
The calculator gives you several different measures of profitability because no single number tells the whole story.
Net Profit
Net profit is the amount remaining after all the costs entered into the calculator have been deducted from your total sales revenue.
For example, if your selling price and buyer postage generate £45 in revenue and your total costs are £28, your estimated net profit is £17.
This is the number that tells you how much money the sale could actually contribute to your business.
Profit Margin
Profit margin shows how much of your total revenue remains as profit.
The calculator uses:
Profit Margin = Net Profit ÷ Total Revenue × 100
A higher margin generally gives you more room to absorb discounts, returns or unexpected expenses.
However, margin should always be considered alongside the amount of profit generated and how quickly the product is expected to sell.
Return on Investment (ROI)
ROI measures your profit relative to the amount you paid for the stock.
The calculator uses:
ROI = Net Profit ÷ Item Purchase Cost × 100
If you spend £10 on an item and generate £20 profit, that represents a 200% ROI.
ROI is particularly useful when comparing sourcing opportunities because it shows how efficiently your stock investment could generate profit.
Break-even Selling Price
Your break-even price is the approximate minimum selling price required to cover the costs and selling fees entered into the calculator.
Selling below this figure would result in an estimated loss.
This can be especially useful when:
• accepting offers
• planning discounts
• negotiating bundles
• clearing slow-moving stock
or deciding whether an item is worth sourcing.
Profit per £1 Invested
This figure converts ROI into a simple cash measure.
For example:
£1.80 profit per £1 invested
means every £1 spent purchasing the item generates approximately £1.80 of estimated profit after the other costs entered.
This makes different sourcing opportunities much easier to compare.
A profit calculation is only as useful as the figures you enter.
One of the most common reseller mistakes is remembering the purchase price and marketplace fee while overlooking smaller operating costs.
Item Purchase Cost
Include the full amount you paid to acquire the product.
For bundles or multi-buy purchases, allocate a realistic cost to each item before calculating profit.
Marketplace Fees
Enter the percentage fee and any fixed transaction charge relevant to your selling platform.
Marketplace fee structures can vary by platform, seller type, category and optional services, so use the dedicated SellerStack marketplace calculators when you need more detailed fee modelling.
Shipping Cost
Use the actual amount you expect to pay to send the order.
If the buyer pays postage separately, enter that amount under Postage Charged to Buyer as revenue and your own courier/postage expense under Your Shipping Cost.
Packaging
Packaging expenses can include:
• mailing bags
• cardboard boxes
• tape
• labels
• bubble wrap
• void fill
• protective sleeves
These costs may look insignificant individually, but they add up quickly over hundreds of orders.
Other Selling Costs
Use the Other Selling Costs field for expenses such as:
• cleaning
• repairs
•replacement parts
• sourcing fees
• preparation costs
• authentication
• advertising
• promotional fees
Including these expenses gives you a much more realistic view of your final profit.
Profit Margin vs ROI: What’s the Difference?
These two numbers are often confused, but they answer different questions.
| Metric | What It Tells You |
|---|---|
| Net Profit | How much money the sale could make |
| Profit Margin | How much of your revenue becomes profit |
| ROI | How efficiently your stock investment generates profit |
| Break-even Price | The minimum approximate price needed to cover costs |
Consider two items.
Item A
Purchase price: £5
Net profit: £10
ROI = 200%
Item B
Purchase price: £40
Net profit: £20
ROI = 50%
Item B generates more cash profit, but Item A produces a much higher return on the money invested.
Neither figure automatically tells you which product is better.
You should also consider:
• selling speed
• demand
• competition
• storage requirements
• return risk
• preparation time
• repeatability
This is why SellerStack shows several profitability metrics together rather than relying on one headline number.
What Is a Good Reseller Profit?
There is no universal profit margin or ROI that every reseller should target.
A lower-margin product may still make sense if it:
A high-ROI product may still be unattractive if it takes months to sell or requires significant time to prepare.
Instead of chasing one fixed percentage, establish minimum targets that make sense for your own business.
Before buying an item, ask:
- How much cash profit will this generate?
- How much money will I have tied up?
- How long could it take to sell?
- How much work is involved?
- Could I repeat this deal regularly?
The strongest sourcing opportunities tend to balance profit, ROI, selling speed and repeatability.
Using the Calculator Before You Buy Stock
This calculator is particularly valuable at the sourcing stage.
Suppose you find an item for £12 and expect it to sell for £40.
The difference appears to be £28.
But once you include:
your actual profit may be significantly lower.
Running those numbers before buying allows you to decide whether to:
Buy it — the expected return meets your targets.
Negotiate — the deal works, but only at a lower purchase price.
Walk away — the margin is too small for the risk or work involved.
For sourcing decisions where you already know your desired profit, use the Maximum Buy Price Calculator to work backwards and determine the highest amount you should consider paying.

Profit starts with smart buying decisions—not lucky sales.
Profit Is More Than the Difference Between Buy Price and Sale Price
Profitable reselling comes from understanding the complete economics of every sale. Purchase price matters, but so do marketplace fees, fulfilment costs, packaging, selling speed and the amount of capital tied up in stock. Use the Reseller Profit Calculator before sourcing, pricing or accepting an offer so you can make decisions based on estimated profit rather than revenue alone.
