Quick Answer

What Does It Really Cost to Sell Through Shopify?

Shopify profitability involves more than the payment-processing charge on an individual order.

A realistic calculation can include product cost, Shopify Payments or external processor fees, shipping, packaging, advertising, apps, your Shopify subscription and other recurring store expenses.

The SellerStack calculator combines those costs to estimate profit per order, profit margin, ROI, monthly profit, break-even selling price and the approximate cost difference between Shopify plans.

Shopify UK Fee Information

Reviewed for Shopify UK: October 2026

Shopify plan prices, payment-processing rates, transaction fees, international-selling charges and product features can change.

SellerStack periodically reviews the assumptions used by this calculator, but sellers should check the rates shown in their own Shopify admin before making important pricing or plan decisions.

How to Use the Shopify Fees & Profit Calculator

Start by matching the calculator to the Shopify setup you actually use, then enter the economics of a typical order.

1. Select Your Shopify Plan

Choose Basic, Grow or Advanced and select the billing frequency that reflects your subscription.

2. Choose Your Payment Setup

Select Shopify Payments, a third-party provider or a custom rate where the figures shown in your own Shopify account are different from the calculator preset.

3. Enter Your Order Revenue

Add the product selling price and any delivery amount charged separately to the customer.

4. Add Your Variable Costs

Include product cost, actual shipping, packaging, advertising and other expenses that arise because the order happened.

5. Add Your Monthly Store Costs

Enter expected monthly order volume, app subscriptions and other recurring store costs so they can be allocated across your orders.

6. Review Order and Monthly Profit Together

Check profit per order alongside monthly profit, margin, ROI, break-even price and the Shopify plan comparison.

SellerStack Tip

Use your actual Shopify rate when available

Published Shopify rates are useful planning defaults, but the rate shown inside your own Shopify Payments settings is the better input when it differs from the preset.

Shopify Basic vs Grow vs Advanced UK

Shopify plans combine a recurring subscription with different payment rates and platform features.

Shopify currently lists the following UK headline prices and standard online card rates:

Plan Monthly Billing Annual Billing Equivalent Standard Online Card Rate
Basic £25 / month £19 / month 2% + £0.25
Grow £65 / month £49 / month 1.7% + £0.25
Advanced £344 / month £259 / month 1.5% + £0.25
Important

These are headline UK rates for the specified standard online card transaction. Different payment methods, card types, international cards or negotiated account arrangements can use different rates.

How Shopify Payments Fees Affect Profit

Shopify Payments processes eligible customer payments directly through Shopify.

The cost depends partly on your Shopify plan and the payment method used by the customer.

Grow

Standard Online Cards

Current published rate: 1.7% + £0.25

Advanced

Standard Online Cards

Current published rate: 1.5% + £0.25

Other Payment Types

Rates Can Differ

Amex, international cards, Klarna and other supported payment methods can use different processing rates.

SellerStack Insight

Payment fees are only one part of Shopify profitability

A £1 payment-processing fee matters, but a £10 customer-acquisition cost or £6 fulfilment cost may have a much larger effect on the final order profit.

Shopify Payments vs Third-Party Payment Providers

If Shopify Payments is used as your sole payment provider, Shopify states that its third-party transaction fees do not apply to orders processed through Shopify Payments.

When an eligible transaction is processed through an external payment provider, two separate costs can become relevant:

  • The external provider’s own processing fee
  • Shopify’s plan-based third-party transaction fee
Shopify Plan Current Third-Party Transaction Fee
Basic 2%
Grow 1%
Advanced 0.6%
Avoid Double-Counting Incorrectly

A third-party provider’s processing charge and Shopify’s third-party transaction fee are different costs.

If your transaction incurs both, include both. If you use Shopify Payments as your sole payment provider, do not add a third-party transaction fee that does not apply.

Variable Costs vs Fixed Shopify Store Costs

One of the most important differences between Shopify and a traditional marketplace is that Shopify businesses often carry recurring store costs even when no order is placed.

Variable Costs

Costs That Change With Orders

  • Product or stock cost
  • Payment processing
  • Shipping
  • Packaging
  • Advertising cost per order
  • Fulfilment
  • Other transaction-specific costs

Why Monthly Order Volume Changes Shopify Profit

Fixed expenses are spread across the orders your store generates.

Suppose your Shopify subscription, apps and other recurring store expenses total £60 per month.

Monthly Orders Fixed Cost Allocated per Order
20 orders £3.00
50 orders £1.20
100 orders £0.60
200 orders £0.30

Allocated Fixed Cost per Order

Monthly Fixed Store Costs ÷ Monthly Orders = Fixed Cost per Order

Why This Matters

A product can look profitable when the Shopify subscription and app costs are ignored, particularly when the store has low order volume.

When Can a More Expensive Shopify Plan Cost Less Overall?

A higher Shopify plan costs more each month but can offer lower payment rates.

At sufficient order volume, the reduction in payment-processing cost can offset some or all of the higher subscription.

Plan Comparison Example

Basic vs Grow on £50 Orders

Using annual-billing-equivalent UK prices and standard online card rates:

  • Basic subscription: £19 per month
  • Grow subscription: £49 per month
  • Monthly subscription difference: £30
  • Basic card percentage: 2%
  • Grow card percentage: 1.7%
  • Percentage difference: 0.3 percentage points

On a £50 order, the percentage-rate saving is approximately:

£50 × 0.3% = £0.15 per order

To recover a £30 monthly subscription difference through that payment-rate saving alone:

£30 ÷ £0.15 = approximately 200 orders per month

Do Not Upgrade on Fees Alone

This simplified comparison considers only subscription and one payment-rate difference.

Shopify plans also differ in features, staff access, reporting, international-selling tools and other capabilities.

Advertising Cost Can Matter More Than Shopify Fees

Shopify gives you your own storefront, but it does not automatically provide marketplace demand for every product.

If you rely on paid advertising to generate orders, customer-acquisition cost can become one of the largest expenses in the transaction.

Simple Example

Suppose an order leaves £18 before advertising.

If it costs £4 to acquire the customer, contribution falls to £14.

If acquisition costs rise to £12, only £6 remains before any other expenses not already included.

SellerStack Tip

Do not judge advertising only by revenue or return on ad spend. Also calculate what remains after product, payment, fulfilment and store costs.

Shipping Charged vs Actual Shipping Cost

Keep these two figures separate.

If a customer pays £4.99 for delivery but fulfilment costs you £6.20, shipping reduces the order contribution by £1.21 before considering any applicable payment-processing effect.

Free Shipping Still Has a Cost

Offering free delivery can be commercially useful, but the courier still needs to be paid. Include that cost in the product economics.

Understanding Your Shopify Calculator Results

Profit Margin

Shows how much of the order revenue remains as estimated profit after the included costs.

ROI

Compares the estimated profit with the product or stock cost entered.

Payment Fees per Order

Shows the estimated Shopify Payments or selected payment-provider costs for the transaction.

Fixed Cost per Order

Shows the portion of your Shopify subscription, apps and other monthly costs allocated to each expected order.

Estimated Monthly Profit

Projects the order economics across the monthly sales volume entered in the calculator.

Break-even Selling Price

Estimates the selling price required to cover the costs included in the calculation without generating a loss.

Orders Needed to Cover Fixed Costs

Estimates how many similar positive-contribution orders may be required to cover the store’s monthly fixed costs.

Payout Is Not Profit

Money transferred from Shopify Payments to your bank account should not automatically be treated as business profit.

Inventory, advertising, shipping, apps, salaries, tax and other business expenses may be paid separately from the Shopify payout.

Shopify Profit Formula

Estimated Profit per Order

Order Revenue − Product Cost − Payment Fees − Shipping − Packaging − Advertising − Other Order Costs − Allocated Monthly Costs = Estimated Profit

Profit Margin

Estimated Profit ÷ Order Revenue × 100 = Profit Margin %

ROI

Estimated Profit ÷ Product Cost × 100 = ROI %

Worked Example: Calculating Shopify Profit per Order

Imagine a Basic Shopify store using the annual-billing-equivalent subscription and the standard UK online card rate.

Worked Example
Order Detail Amount
Customer payment £40.00
Product cost − £12.00
Shipping cost − £3.50
Packaging − £0.60
Advertising cost − £4.00
Shopify Payments at 2% + £0.25 − £1.05
Allocated fixed monthly costs − £0.29
Estimated profit £18.56

The £0.29 fixed allocation assumes £29 of monthly Shopify and app costs spread across 100 orders.

Estimated profit margin:

£18.56 ÷ £40 × 100 = 46.4%

Estimated ROI on the £12 product cost:

£18.56 ÷ £12 × 100 ≈ 154.7%

Example Only

This example uses simplified assumptions. Actual payment rates, tax treatment, returns, advertising costs, subscription charges and other store expenses can change the result.

What Is the Shopify Break-even Selling Price?

The break-even selling price is the approximate product price required to recover the costs entered into the calculator without producing an estimated profit or loss.

It can be useful when:

  • Setting a new product price
  • Planning a discount
  • Reviewing rising advertising costs
  • Checking higher supplier prices
  • Testing a free-shipping offer
  • Deciding whether an existing product is still viable
Break-even Is Not a Target

A product at break-even covers the entered costs but provides no estimated profit to reward the business for its capital, risk or work.

What Does Break-even Order Volume Mean?

The calculator also estimates how many similar orders may be required for their contribution to cover the store’s monthly fixed expenses.

Approximate Fixed-Cost Break-even Volume

Monthly Fixed Costs ÷ Contribution Before Fixed Costs = Orders Required

More Orders Do Not Fix Bad Unit Economics

If each additional order loses money before fixed costs, increasing sales volume can make the problem larger rather than solving it.

International Shopify Sales and Currency Conversion

Selling internationally can introduce additional payment and currency costs.

Shopify currently lists a 2% Shopify Payments currency-conversion fee for UK stores when the customer’s payment currency differs from the payout currency and conversion is required.

2026 Currency Calculation Change

From 6 April 2026, Shopify changed its currency-conversion fee calculation so the conversion fee is calculated directly on the gross order amount.

International card rates, Managed Markets charges, multi-currency payouts and other international-selling costs can also differ from a simple domestic GBP transaction.

International Orders Need Their Own Check

Do not assume a margin calculated for a domestic UK order will be identical when the same product is sold internationally.

How Long Do Shopify Payments Take in the UK?

Shopify currently states that the minimum settlement time for Shopify Payments in the UK is 3 business days.

Banks can then require additional time before the money appears in your account.

Cash Flow Matters

A profitable Shopify product can still create cash-flow pressure if you need to pay suppliers, advertising or fulfilment costs before the customer payment reaches your bank.

Shopify Profit Margin vs ROI

Profit margin and ROI measure different parts of the business.

Profit Margin

Compares estimated profit with the revenue generated by the order.

It helps show how much of each pound of sales remains after the costs included in the calculation.

ROI

Compares estimated profit with the money invested in acquiring or producing the product.

It helps show how efficiently stock capital is being used.

How to Improve Shopify Profitability

1. Improve Product Cost

Better supplier pricing improves the economics of every unit sold.

2. Measure Customer-Acquisition Cost

Track how much advertising spend is required to generate an order, not just the revenue attributed to campaigns.

3. Review App Subscriptions

Small recurring app fees can accumulate. Remove software that no longer saves enough time, improves conversion or generates enough value to justify its cost.

4. Review Shipping and Packaging

Fulfilment costs often provide more room for improvement than small changes to payment processing.

5. Compare Shopify Plans at Your Actual Volume

A more expensive plan can sometimes make financial sense as transaction volume grows, but compare the complete plan value rather than payment rates alone.

6. Recalculate Existing Products

Supplier prices, advertising costs, apps and fulfilment charges change. A product that worked last year may not have the same economics today.

Common Shopify Profit Calculation Mistakes

1. Looking at Revenue Instead of Profit

A £20,000 sales month does not show what remains after stock, advertising, fulfilment, processing and overheads.

2. Ignoring the Shopify Subscription

The subscription is a real business cost even though it is not deducted separately from each customer order.

3. Forgetting App Costs

A store using multiple paid apps can build a significant recurring monthly software bill.

4. Ignoring Advertising

Customer-acquisition cost can materially change the true contribution from an order.

5. Using the Wrong Payment Rate

Payment rates can differ by plan, payment method, card type and store circumstances.

6. Forgetting Third-Party Transaction Fees

An external processor can involve both its own fee and a Shopify third-party transaction fee.

7. Treating Shipping Revenue as Profit

Delivery charged to the customer and the actual fulfilment cost are different figures.

8. Ignoring International Costs

Currency conversion, international cards and cross-border fulfilment can change the economics of overseas orders.

9. Choosing a Shopify Plan on Payment Rate Alone

Subscription cost and plan features also matter.

10. Assuming More Sales Always Mean More Profit

Scaling weak unit economics can increase turnover while making little improvement to the business result.

Before You Price or Scale a Shopify Product

  • Have I used my current Shopify plan?
  • Have I checked the payment rate that actually applies?
  • Have I included the complete product cost?
  • Have I included real shipping and packaging costs?
  • Have I included advertising or acquisition cost?
  • Have I included recurring app subscriptions?
  • Have I allocated Shopify and other fixed costs across orders?
  • Could third-party transaction fees apply?
  • Could currency conversion apply?
  • What is the break-even selling price?
  • Does the product still work if advertising costs rise?
  • Does the product still work at a discounted selling price?

SellerStack Verdict

Calculate the Store Economics, Not Just the Payment Fee

Shopify gives sellers more control over their own storefront, but that also means profitability depends on costs that do not exist in the same way on many marketplace platforms.

Payment processing, subscriptions, apps, advertising, fulfilment and customer acquisition all need to be considered alongside the product itself.

Calculate profit per order, spread fixed costs across realistic sales volume and compare plans using your own numbers before changing prices or scaling spend.
